Cryogenics Engineer

Proxima Fusion seeks a Senior Cryogenics Engineer in Zürich to design and validate cooling systems for its Alpha stellarator, supporting the goal of scientific breakeven.

This position plays a pivotal role in the development of Alpha, Proxima Fusion’s scientific breakeven stellarator. The engineer will be responsible for the design, analysis, and validation of cryogenic systems used for superconducting magnets, blending advanced systems thinking with practical technical expertise.

Responsibilities

• Define, engineer, and evaluate cooling solutions to satisfy cryogenic performance targets, confirming model precision through rigorous testing protocols
• Lead technical efforts during the assembly, commissioning, and ongoing operation of cryogenic plants and their associated subsystems
• Perform performance assessments, execute tests, and resolve issues within cryogenic infrastructure
• Partner closely with specialists in electromagnetics, mechanics, electrical engineering, magnet design, and physics
• Serve as the primary technical liaison for external suppliers and partners, co-designing high-quality cryogenic systems with efficiency

Requirements

• Solid background in the design, commissioning, and operational management of cryogenic hardware
• Demonstrated success in specifying and engineering cryogenic cooling systems using multi-physics simulation tools and reduced-order modelling
• Experience in validating cryogenic setups via a mix of simulations, physical testing, and prototyping
• Proven capability to lead external work packages and oversee procurement activities
• An engineering profile that merges strong analytical modelling abilities with practical experience in building and running cryogenic systems
