The company seeks a Senior Expert in Science & Technology for its Analytical Characterization team in Basel. The role focuses on mass spectrometry-based characterization of biologics, requiring strong expertise in LC-MS and protein biochemistry.

This position sits within the Analytical Characterization team of the Biologics Analytical Development unit. The successful candidate will join the mass spectrometry group, where the primary objective is to characterize novel biologics entities and ensure product quality through advanced analytical methods.

Responsibilities

  • Characterize biopharmaceutical products, including monoclonal antibodies and ADCs, along with their modifications and degradation products using advanced instrumentation.
  • Optimize sample preparation, liquid chromatography, ion mobility separation, and mass spectrometry acquisition methods to monitor product quality attributes.
  • Draft method development and robustness reports, as well as MS sections in characterization reports for structure elucidation and impurity analysis.
  • Present findings at internal meetings and international conferences.
  • Promote environmental sustainability and GreenLab initiatives in daily operations.
  • Maintain and qualify laboratory equipment, troubleshoot LC-MS instruments, and serve as a technical liaison with vendors.
  • Document experiments and manage structured data in electronic systems.

Requirements

  • Hold an MSc in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, analytical chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills in English.
  • Possess hands-on experience with liquid chromatography systems (HPLC/UHPLC) such as Thermo Vanquish or Waters Acquity.
  • Have practical experience in mass spectrometry analyses of biopharmaceuticals at intact, subunit, and peptide levels, including RP-MS, CEX-MS, and MAM.
  • Be skilled in protein sample preparation and familiar with automated liquid handlers.
  • Show strong theoretical knowledge of protein biochemistry and post-translational modifications.
  • Understand mass spectrometry principles and have experience with Orbitrap or Q-ToF analyzers and Data Dependent Acquisition.
  • Interpret and present scientific data critically and objectively.
  • Maintain a proactive, curious mindset toward new technologies and environmental sustainability, with strong organizational skills.

Nice to have

  • Proficiency in German or French.
  • Experience with ion mobility separation on Waters cyclic IMS mass spectrometers.
  • Knowledge of fragmentation techniques such as CID, HCD, ECD, or ETD.
  • Familiarity with software for intact mass deconvolution, protein identification, and semi-quantification (e.g., Genedata Expressionist Refiner MS).
  • Experience in mass spectrometry analysis of oligonucleotides.
