Post Doctorate Scientist (IHB) - In Vitro Modeling Adaptive Immunologist

Roche · Basel

Roche seeks a Post Doctorate Scientist in Immunology to study adaptive immune responses in human CNS diseases at the Institute of Human Biology in Basel. The role involves developing in vitro models of neuroinflammation, analyzing immune cell states using multi-omic techniques, and collaborating with computational scientists and drug developers.

This position at the Roche Institute of Human Biology (IHB) in Basel focuses on defining adaptive immune cell states in human central nervous system diseases. The scientist will develop tissue-relevant in vitro models to support translational research, working closely with computational experts and drug development teams across pRED.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and carry out experiments to study adaptive immune responses in human neuroinflammation, focusing on T-, B-, and stromal cells in relevant tissue contexts.
  • Create and apply in vitro models that mimic key aspects of CNS meningeal inflammation, including immune–stromal interactions and TLS-like structures.
  • Conduct detailed immune phenotyping and generate multi-omic data (e.g., flow cytometry, single-cell RNA-seq, V(D)J profiling) to characterize immune–stromal interactions and define immune cell states.
  • Collaborate with computational scientists to turn atlas-derived cell state data into testable hypotheses and refine in vitro models based on human data.
  • Work with teams across IHB and pRED, including drug developers, to align research findings with therapeutic goals in Neuroscience and Rare Diseases.
  • Share results through scientific papers, presentations, and team discussions, clearly linking findings to human biology and therapy development.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Immunology, Neuroimmunology/Neuroinflammation, Bioengineering, or a related field.
  • Doctoral studies completed within the last four years.
  • Proven productivity, evidenced by publications.
  • In-depth knowledge of adaptive immune biology, especially T- and/or B-cell biology.
  • Practical experience with flow cytometry and cell sorting.
  • Experience using primary human cells or human tissue samples.
  • Experience with in vitro model systems such as co-culture or functional assays.
  • Hands-on experience generating multi-omic datasets (e.g., single-cell RNA-seq, immune repertoire profiling).
  • Strong interest in human immunology and neuroinflammation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication skills with professional fluency in English.

Nice to have

  • Research background in neuroinflammation, including conditions like multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Familiarity with CNS or meningeal biology.
  • Experience in stromal cell biology or tissue niche interactions.
  • Work with tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS) or lymphoid tissue organization.
  • Experience developing advanced in vitro systems such as organoids or ex vivo tissue models.
  • Use of advanced immune profiling methods like spectral flow cytometry.
  • Exposure to spatial biology workflows or sample preparation.
  • Collaboration with computational biology teams; basic coding skills in R or Python are beneficial.
  • Interest in translating human biology insights into therapeutic strategies.

What the company offers

  • Opportunity to conduct research in IHB’s collaborative open-lab environment.
  • Leadership in experimental efforts to generate, validate, and functionally test immune cell states modeling human CNS and meningeal tissues.
  • Collaboration with computational scientists and engagement with drug developers across pRED.
  • Contribution to long-term therapeutic impact in Neuroscience and Rare Diseases.
