Postdoc position: Chemist for selective ion scavenging in batteries

Empa seeks a Postdoc Chemist in St. Gallen to develop melt-spun liquid-core fibers for selective ion scavenging in lithium-ion batteries within the Laboratory for Advanced Fibers.

This position is based at the Laboratory for Advanced Fibers in St. Gallen, an institute dedicated to creating functional polymer fibers for energy storage, health, and environmental applications. The successful candidate will lead the development of a novel class of melt-spun liquid-core fibers designed to selectively remove transition metal ions and other degradation byproducts from lithium-ion batteries.

Responsibilities

  • Create melt-spun fibers featuring polyolefin sheaths and functionalized, hydrophobic liquid or gel cores.
  • Investigate selective scavenging systems for transition metal ions and hydrofluoric acid (HF), utilizing chelating ligands, reactive nanoparticles, and specific additives.
  • Refine melt-spinning, uniaxial stretching, and post-treatment processes to manage sheath porosity and regulate ion diffusion.
  • Secure research funding through grant acquisition and produce scientific publications.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to students and interns.
  • Work closely with colleagues in chemistry, materials science, and electrochemistry.

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in chemistry or a closely related discipline such as polymer or materials science.
  • Professional fluency in English.

Nice to have

  • Prior experience with polymer-ion interactions, chelation chemistry, or battery materials.
  • Proficiency in the German language.
