Robotics Engineering Intern - Mechatronic Design

Flexion Robotics seeks an Intern for Mechatronic Design in Zürich. The role focuses on creating and integrating hardware extensions for humanoid robots, from initial concept through to field testing and validation.

Flexion Robotics is developing the intelligence layer for next-generation humanoid robots, a venture founded by scientists from Nvidia and ETH Zürich. This internship provides an opportunity to own the end-to-end lifecycle of mechatronic extensions, ensuring they are ready for deployment in real-world environments.

Responsibilities

  • Create mechatronic components, including manipulators, sensor payloads, and custom mounting solutions.
  • Guide hardware designs from initial concepts through CAD modeling, prototyping, and fabrication until they are validated and ready for robotic integration.
  • Integrate new hardware with the existing software stack, handling drivers, interfaces, and commissioning on physical robots.
  • Conduct testing and iterate on designs based on performance data gathered from real-world usage.
  • Maintain the overall health and readiness of the robot fleet, including repairs and routine upkeep.
  • Document design specifications, integration procedures, and key lessons learned throughout the development process.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an MSc program in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience working with robotic or mechatronic systems.
  • Proficiency in at least one CAD platform, such as SolidWorks or Onshape.
  • Strong programming capabilities in C++.
  • Comfortable operating within Linux/Ubuntu environments.
  • Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively with team members.
  • Professional working proficiency in English.

Nice to have

  • Experience with rapid prototyping techniques, including 3D printing, CNC machining, or general fabrication.
  • Practical electronics skills, such as soldering, PCB design, sensor integration, and debugging using multimeters or oscilloscopes.
  • Familiarity with ROS or ROS 2 middleware.
  • Ability to use Python for scripting, tooling, or test automation.
  • Basic experience with Git and version control systems.
  • A portfolio showcasing previous builds, robots, or custom hardware projects.
