Senior Actuary role within Swiss Re's Continental Europe Life & Health unit. This hybrid position in Zürich requires a qualified actuary with strong technical and commercial expertise to lead pricing, portfolio management, and strategic initiatives.

This position sits within the Continental Europe Market Unit of Swiss Re's Life & Health business. The role combines deep technical knowledge with commercial influence, allowing the incumbent to lead, shape, and drive significant impact across the region.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Chief Actuary for specific Continental European markets, overseeing pricing strategies, referrals, and core actuarial assumptions.
  • Track portfolio performance regularly to spot emerging risks and opportunities, then guide value-improving management actions.
  • Collaborate with Client Management, Underwriting, Valuation, and Portfolio Management groups to find ways to boost portfolio value.
  • Provide independent actuarial challenge and strategic insight to Inforce Optimisation and Portfolio Management teams.
  • Lead actuarial evaluations for repricing, recaptures, in-force transactions, and other major strategic projects.
  • Participate in client meetings, transaction structuring, and negotiations, applying both actuarial precision and commercial insight.
  • Support governance through referral reviews and independent challenge to ensure sound decision-making.
  • Maintain an end-to-end view of the actuarial control cycle, ensuring consistent insights flow back to relevant teams.
  • Represent markets and contribute to cross-functional initiatives across Continental Europe.
  • Mentor junior actuaries, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.

Requirements

  • Qualified actuary (SAV, DAV, FIA, FSA, or equivalent) with substantial experience in life, health, or reinsurance.
  • Strong technical foundation in pricing, valuation, or portfolio management, with the ability to assess performance and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Proven ability to influence stakeholders, constructively challenge senior leaders, and drive results across organizational boundaries.
  • Commercial acumen with a solid grasp of reinsurance value drivers and the ability to apply commercial judgment to actuarial work.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex topics clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, plus fluency in English.

Nice to have

  • Experience in portfolio management, in-force management, or portfolio steering.
  • Background in supporting client negotiations and transaction structuring.
  • Proven leadership qualities, including the ability to inspire, engage, and empower a diverse team, with a passion for developing others.
  • Strong understanding of various valuation methods, including IFRS17.
  • Additional European language skills, particularly German, French, Italian, or Spanish.

What the company offers

  • Base salary between 132,000 CHF and 198,000 CHF for a full-time role.
  • Eligibility for an attractive performance-based annual bonus.
  • Hybrid work model requiring at least three days per week in the office.
