Software Engineer, Blockchain & Distributed Systems

Blockstream, a market leader in Bitcoin security and Layer-2 technologies, seeks a mid-level Software Engineer in Lugano, Switzerland, to contribute to blockchain and digital asset solutions for enterprise clients. The role involves developing secure, scalable platforms with hands-on experience in distributed systems and fintech.

Blockstream, founded in 2014 by cryptographers and engineers passionate about Bitcoin, is a leader in Bitcoin security and Layer-2 technologies. This role within the Service & Enterprise Solutions team focuses on building secure, scalable platforms for banking clients, offering hands-on experience with blockchain, cryptography, and financial technology while working alongside experienced developers and architects.

Responsibilities

• Write clear, maintainable code that follows team standards and best practices
• Develop features according to technical specifications
• Identify and fix software bugs with support from senior team members
• Create and run unit tests to ensure code reliability
• Take part in code reviews to gain insights from experienced developers
• Assist with integrating APIs, databases, and external systems
• Provide clear documentation for code and technical processes
• Work with architects, DevOps engineers, and QA teams
• Apply software development principles, design patterns, and fintech knowledge

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 0–5 years of professional software development experience (including internships and academic projects)
• Proficiency in at least one programming language: Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, Java, or Rust
• Knowledge of core programming concepts: data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming
• Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows
• Self-motivated and able to work across teams and geographies, maintaining high-quality and customer-focused delivery
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Willingness to learn new technologies quickly
• English required; Swiss German/German, French, or Italian preferred
• Must be located in Switzerland, with focus on Lugano

Nice to have

• Basic knowledge of blockchain, distributed systems, or cryptography
• Experience with API design and RESTful services
• Interest in cryptocurrency, digital assets, or decentralized technologies
• Background with databases (SQL/NoSQL)
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) or containerization (Docker)
• Understanding of agile development practices
• Contributions to open-source projects or a personal coding portfolio
• Interest in advancing into senior development or architecture roles
