Elan AG seeks a Senior Solution Engineer to lead the development of 'Roche Linux', a custom Debian-based operating system for medical devices, based in Zug.
The company operates a specialized team of software and hardware experts within Roche's medical instrument development division. This role is central to building and maintaining 'Roche Linux', a purpose-built, Debian-based platform that powers next-generation medical devices. The engineer serves as a core contributor and consultant, ensuring the foundational operating system remains robust, secure, and tailored to MedTech requirements.
Responsibilities
- Manage a custom Debian-based distribution, handling kernel customization, driver integration, and the creation or maintenance of Debian packages.
- Enhance infrastructure and processes for building, testing, and releasing the Linux distribution.
- Serve as the primary expert for complex, low-level system issues, conducting deep-dive troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
- Advise internal project teams on best practices for leveraging the Roche Linux platform.
- Identify opportunities to improve the distribution, tools, processes, system performance, security, and automation.
Requirements
- Over 10 years of hands-on experience with Linux.
- Proven track record of building, modifying, or maintaining a customized Linux distribution, with a strong preference for Debian.
- Expertise in creating, patching, and maintaining .deb packages from scratch, including understanding policy, dependencies, and best practices.
- Fluency in Python and Shell scripting for building tools and automating system tasks.
- Solid grasp of operating system theory, software build systems (make, CMake), and the full testing and packaging lifecycle.
- Advanced English proficiency is mandatory.
Nice to have
- Proficiency in a systems programming language like C or C++.
- Experience with embedded systems, the ARM platform, hardware drivers, and low-level hardware/software integration.
- Knowledge of modern infrastructure: Virtualization (KVM), Containers (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS).
- German is a welcome bonus.
