Staff Software Engineer, Performance and Kernel, DeepMind

Google DeepMind seeks a Staff Software Engineer in Zürich to develop low-level performance software and infrastructure for new systolic array accelerators, supporting the creation of general-purpose learning agents.

This position sits within DeepMind’s GenAI Systems group, functioning as a co-design team across Google’s vertically integrated stack. The team combines research with the delivery of production-quality hardware and software products to advance the mission of building the world's first general-purpose learning agent.

Responsibilities

• Develop low-level performance software for new systolic array accelerators.
• Identify high-value algorithms and problems that align with the new hardware capabilities.
• Create programming infrastructure to simplify development for both performance and general software engineers.
• Partner with application, algorithm, and performance-tuning experts to co-design solutions that optimize efficiency, performance, and programmability.
• Report performance, programmability, and efficiency results to internal teams and partner groups.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of software development experience.
• 5 years of experience in testing and launching software products.
• 5 years of experience in power or performance modeling or system performance analysis.
• 5 years of experience with Linux Kernel development and software and hardware architecture.
• 3 years of experience in software design and architecture.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• 8 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
• 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.
• 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
• Deep expertise in operating systems, networking systems, storage systems, analytics, machine learning, working with distributed query processing and deep functional flows.
