Empa seeks a System Engineer for Cell Culture Automation in St. Gallen. The role focuses on developing and maintaining robotic systems for complex cell-based models within the Nanomaterials in Health department.

This position sits within the Nanomaterials in Health department at Empa St. Gallen, a group comprising biologists, chemists, and bioinformaticians. The team works to understand and manage interactions between nanomaterials and biological systems by creating cell-based models. The engineer will handle the full lifecycle of complex cell culture automation, from initial concept design through to practical implementation and ongoing maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside a diverse team to design concepts for automating intricate cell culture workflows using robotic technology.
  • Perform needs assessments to establish system specifications and functional requirements.
  • Assist the Laboratory Head in evaluating, comparing, and choosing appropriate robotic solutions, while supporting the procurement process.
  • Oversee the deployment of chosen systems, including configuration and programming of automated procedures.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in life sciences, engineering, or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in programming and operating laboratory automation and liquid-handling equipment, alongside related quality management tasks.
  • Proven ability to adapt and optimize in vitro assays and cell-based tests.
  • Solid knowledge of mammalian cell culture techniques and 3D cell cultures, such as organoids.
  • Fluent proficiency in both German and English for daily professional communication.
