Global Medical Director Gastroenterology

Abbott seeks a Global Medical Director for Gastroenterology to lead medical strategy and safety oversight for its GI therapeutic area from its Basel, Switzerland location.

This position serves as a pivotal member of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team within the Established Pharmaceuticals Division. The incumbent is responsible for defining and executing the global medical strategy for the Gastroenterology therapeutic area, ensuring alignment with broader corporate medical goals.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the global medical strategy and operational activities for the Gastroenterology therapeutic area and its associated products.
  • Create comprehensive medical plans for the therapeutic area that incorporate research priorities, publication strategies, real-world evidence, and study initiatives.
  • Oversee and govern Global Medical Affairs research projects, including investigator-sponsored studies, post-marketing surveillance, observational research, Phase IV trials, and real-world evidence studies.
  • Participate in the Scientific Review Committee to jointly evaluate and approve clinical activities managed by Clinical Development.
  • Serve on the Product Safety Team to monitor medical safety, contribute to Periodic Safety Update Reports (PSURs), clinical overviews, and risk-management plans.
  • Manage and develop a team consisting of two direct reports.
  • Guarantee that all medical and promotional activities adhere to global guidelines and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Life Sciences: M.D. with at least 5 years of experience, PharmD or PhD with 7+ years, or M.Sc. with 10+ years.
  • Extensive background in Medical Affairs and/or clinical research within pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, or similar environments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of clinical trial methodology, safety oversight mechanisms, and regulatory requirements.
  • Full professional proficiency in English, both written and spoken.

Nice to have

  • Proficiency in additional languages is considered an advantage.
  • Prior experience in country-specific or regional medical roles is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging Key Opinion Leaders and scientific societies.
