Work Selection seeks a Senior Linux System Engineer for a 12-month on-site contract in Rotkreuz. The role focuses on building and maintaining 'Roche Linux', a specialized Debian-based platform for medical devices.
This position involves joining a specialized team to develop 'Roche Linux', a Debian-based operating system platform designed for medical devices. The engineer acts as a core contributor and consultant, ensuring the foundational OS is robust, secure, and tailored to MedTech requirements. The assignment is temporary for 12 months, with the possibility of extension.
Responsibilities
- Manage the custom Debian-based distribution, including kernel customization, driver integration, and package maintenance.
- Improve infrastructure and processes for building, testing, and releasing the Linux distribution.
- Serve as the primary expert for complex, low-level system issues, performing deep-dive troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
- Guide internal project teams on leveraging the Roche Linux platform effectively.
- Identify needs and champion solutions to enhance the distribution, tools, processes, system performance, security, or automation.
Requirements
- 10+ years of deep, hands-on Linux mastery across the entire Linux stack.
- Proven experience building, modifying, or maintaining a customized Linux distribution, with strong preference for Debian.
- Expertise in creating, patching, and maintaining .deb packages from scratch, understanding policy, dependencies and best practices.
- Fluency in Python and Shell scripting for building tools and automating system tasks.
- Solid grasp of operating system theory, software build systems (make, CMake), and the full testing and packaging lifecycle.
- Advanced English skills are mandatory.
Nice to have
- Proficiency in a systems programming language like C or C++.
- Experience with embedded systems, the ARM platform, hardware drivers, and low-level hardware/software integration.
- Knowledge of modern infrastructure: Virtualization (KVM), Containers (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS).
- German language skills are a welcome bonus.
