The Idiap Research Institute seeks a PhD student to join the SATURNA project, focusing on integrating biological knowledge into RNA language models and improving their interpretability. The role is based in Martigny, Switzerland, with EPFL affiliation.
This position is part of the SNF-funded SATURNA initiative, which aims to decode the dynamic processes of RNA to understand disease states at cellular and molecular scales. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team combining expertise in artificial intelligence, computational RNA biology, and neuroscience, working on methods to integrate prior biological knowledge into RNA AI models and enhance their explanation and interpretation.
Responsibilities
- Develop and refine methods for incorporating existing biological knowledge into RNA artificial intelligence models.
- Create improved techniques for explaining and interpreting these AI models.
- Conduct rigorous empirical research in close collaboration with SATURNA partners.
- Write and review scientific publications.
- Participate in teaching and outreach activities as needed.
Requirements
- Hold a recent Master of Science degree in computer science, computational biology, or a related quantitative field.
- Demonstrate strong programming proficiency in Python.
- Show experience in analyzing biological data.
- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Display strong organizational abilities, enthusiasm, and scientific curiosity.
- Show high motivation for academic research work.
Nice to have
- Experience in fine-tuning large AI models for domain-specific tasks.
- Contributions to open-source projects or publicly available research code.
- Familiarity with RNA biology.
