ABB seeks a Senior Firmware Engineer in Quartino, CH, to design and develop firmware for power electronic converters and communication modules. The role requires expertise in C/C++/Python, firmware development for microcontrollers, and experience in structured development processes, with a hybrid work model and full-time employment.
This role supports ABB’s innovation in technology and product development by identifying and implementing solutions for complex engineering challenges. The engineer will contribute to R&D efforts, working independently and collaboratively to advance firmware capabilities for power electronics.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement firmware for power electronic converters and communication modules, ensuring reliable performance and cybersecurity.
- Perform unit, integration, and system testing to verify software functionality and stability.
- Collaborate with system architects and hardware/software engineers to convert system requirements into detailed firmware specifications.
- Support intellectual property development and work with global engineering teams to share knowledge and improve processes.
Requirements
- Strong proficiency in C, C++, Python, and assembler, supported by solid computer science fundamentals.
- Experience with structured development processes, including requirement analysis, design, implementation, testing, and documentation.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience developing control firmware for microcontrollers or DSPs in power electronic products such as UPS, BESS, or renewable energy systems.
- Familiarity with development infrastructure including Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, git, build systems, unit testing, debug probes, and oscilloscopes.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Information, Electrical, Power Electronic, Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related field.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Italian.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and experience with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, IEC61850, Profibus, and CAN bus.
