Staff Software Engineer - AI-native automation

Nexthink seeks a Staff Software Engineer to lead the AI-native transformation of its Flow automation platform in Lausanne. This role focuses on building large-scale, distributed systems using Java and generative AI.

The company is undertaking a greenfield initiative to evolve its enterprise automation product, Flow, into an AI-native platform. In this capacity, intelligent agents will dynamically create and orchestrate executions. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape a product that is still in its early stages within a small, high-impact team where priorities evolve and technical approaches are actively debated.

Responsibilities

• Transform the Flow platform from a human-operated tool into a system where AI agents can dynamically generate and execute workflows.
• Design and deliver large-scale, distributed, high-throughput, and real-time systems tailored for enterprise customers.
• Collaborate with Product Management and UX teams to define valuable features and justify their development.
• Utilize generative AI as a fundamental component, continuously measuring and iterating on its performance.
• Guide architectural choices, elevate engineering standards, and mentor fellow engineers.
• Partner with Product, Infrastructure, Security, Cost Governance, and AI/ML groups to align engineering strategies.
• Ensure observability, performance, resilience, and scalability across the entire technology stack.
• Raise the technical bar by supporting other engineers and fostering team growth through strong technical leadership.

Requirements

• Proven product engineering background with experience building scalable products.
• Experience applying generative AI to create real product features and iterating on those systems.
• Background in large-scale distributed systems with real-time requirements, high throughput, and fault tolerance.
• Over 10 years of backend engineering experience, including at least 3 years in Staff or Principal-level roles.
• Expertise in Java (version 17 or higher), with a strong foundation in distributed systems, concurrency, and high availability.
• Hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures, including AWS or similar platforms, Kubernetes/ECS, and containerized deployments.
• Deep understanding of API design, streaming data, and event-driven systems.
• Exceptional communication skills to influence cross-functional teams and leadership.
• Track record of mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar.
• Commitment to engineering excellence, including CI/CD pipelines and observability.
