Systems Engineer/DevOps Eng, ESC Managed Operations

Amazon Switzerland seeks a Senior Systems Engineer/DevOps Eng for the ESC Managed Operations team to oversee the 2025 European Sovereign Cloud launch and ensure high availability for EU customers.

This position sits within the AWS Managed Operations team, where you will build and lead development and operations groups focused on the European Sovereign Cloud (ESC). The primary objective is to manage the 2025 rollout of this cloud initiative while shaping the future of AWS services, ensuring that EU clients receive scalable, highly available infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Manage the deployment and launch activities for the European Sovereign Cloud in 2025.
• Work alongside technology leaders to refine daily operational processes.
• Drive enhancements in system availability, reliability, latency, performance, and overall efficiency.
• Participate in on-call schedules to address incidents occurring outside standard business hours.
• Monitor service health, detect anomalies, and create detailed bug reports with actionable steps.
• Provide feedback on change management documentation and help clear operational backlogs.
• Write and test scripts to automate and improve operational workflows.
• Communicate insights regarding the European Sovereign Cloud to various service teams.
• Perform root-cause analysis to maintain system resilience and fault tolerance.

Requirements

• Fluent proficiency in both written and spoken English.
• Must hold citizenship of an EU member state and currently reside within the EU.
• Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related IT field, or have equivalent professional experience.
• Demonstrate knowledge or hands-on experience with scripting languages (such as Bash, Python, or Ruby) or software development (like Java or TypeScript).
• Understand fundamental concepts of Linux operating systems and networking.

Nice to have

• Ability to execute standard operating procedures and adhere to operational best practices.
• Experience operating services within AWS or other cloud platforms.
• Background in managing 24/7 high-availability, distributed software applications.
• Skills in performance tuning, fleet utilization optimization, and monitoring frameworks.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code principles and tools.
