This position supports the Machine Vision team at B. Braun New Ventures in Freiburg. The role focuses on developing computer vision systems for surgical use, covering everything from data generation to automated validation workflows. Candidates must commit to a minimum of five months.

Responsibilities

  • Generate and organize datasets for tracking surgical tools using real operating room footage.
  • Build simulated datasets in controlled settings with varying zoom and focus levels.
  • Configure and manage a dedicated compute node for nightly automated validation runs.
  • Create scheduling and automation workflows, including cron jobs, services, and Docker-based execution.
  • Assess and benchmark computer vision pipelines, such as object detection and keypoint tracking, against set performance metrics.
  • Review validation outcomes to enhance pipeline robustness and reproducibility.
  • Maintain structured documentation for datasets, experiments, and results.
  • Work alongside software, hardware, and clinical teams in an interdisciplinary setting.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong Python programming abilities for data processing, scripting, and automation.
  • Practical experience with Linux (Ubuntu) and fundamental system administration tasks.
  • Knowledge of Docker and containerized workflows.
  • Foundational understanding of computer vision and machine learning pipelines, including detection and tracking.
  • Experience managing datasets, whether synthetic, simulated, or real-world.
  • Familiarity with model evaluation metrics like accuracy, detection rate, and stability.
  • Basic awareness of GPU versus CPU inference workflows.

Nice to have

  • Strong English communication skills; German proficiency is advantageous.
